This is a very rare stock certificate entitled, ‘Share One Hundred Dollars Each / Shares $100.00 Each – No. 4 / Mobile and Eastern Shore Railway and Navigation Company / Chartered by Act of Legislature of Alabama, Approved February 27, 1889 / This Certifies, That (Jas. A Carney) / is entitled to (Twenty) Shares in the Capital Stock / of the Mobile and Eastern Shore Railway and Navigation Company, / transferable only on the books of the Company, in person or by / attorney, on the surrender of this Certificate. / In Whitnell Whereof, The said Company have caused these presents / to be signed by their President, and countersigned by their Secretary, / and the seal of said Company to be hereto affixed. / Point Clear, Alabama, (Oct. 19th) 188(9) / (C. W. Joseph Secretary. W. W. Perkins President.’. James A. Carney was a local businessman who had several paddle wheelers himself, one being the ‘James A. Carney’. I have talked to people who have knowledge of the company being formed but no one who has every heard of one of the stock certificates.
